Summary
I worked as a Production Assistant / Grip Swing on HGTV’s Lakefront Empire, supporting the camera and lighting departments while also assisting with production logistics. My responsibilities ranged from technical setup to on-set support, helping ensure smooth shooting days for a nationally broadcast home lifestyle series.

 

Context & Problem

Producing a reality-based television series like Lakefront Empire requires flexibility, quick problem-solving, and efficient crew coordination. With multiple location shoots and a busy schedule, the production team needed crew members who could reliably manage equipment and support both the creative and logistical sides of filming.

 

Role & Responsibilities

  • Assisted with grip department tasks, including lighting setups, rigging, and equipment movement.

  • Provided production assistance such as staging, location prep, and handling gear.

  • Worked with the Director of Photography and Gaffer to ensure technical needs were met.

  • Supported transitions between shooting locations and helped maintain schedule efficiency.

 

Process

  • Set up grip and lighting equipment across multiple indoor and outdoor locations.

  • Collaborated with the production team to anticipate equipment and logistical needs.

  • Assisted with safe handling and transport of gear between sets and vehicles.

  • Maintained clear communication with the crew to adapt quickly to evolving production demands.

  • Provided reliable grip support for the camera and lighting departments.

Reflection

My time on Lakefront Empire reinforced my ability to operate as both a technical crew member and production support, balancing grip responsibilities with PA duties. This project deepened my understanding of teamwork and adaptability in a professional TV production setting.
