Performance Visuals

Case Study

Project/Role Overview

Position: Full-Time Employee

Role: Motion Graphics / Synced Visual Content Creator

Title: Synced Performance Visuals — FIFA Fan Fest
Company: Strange Music Inc.

Summary

I created synced video visuals for Tech N9ne's performance screens at FIFA Fan Fest, producing content timed to 13 tracks played during the set

Context & Problem

FIFA hosts a global soccer tournament every four years and hosts FIFA Fan Festivals as an official gathering point for fans to come together to watch matches live on the big screen. On the weekends, they feature major headlining performances like Tech N9ne, The Chainsmokers, Flo Rida, and more. At Strange Music (Tech N9ne’s Record label), I created synced visuals for 13 songs of Tech N9ne’s headlining performance.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Created synchronized visuals for 13 of Tech N9ne’s top hits

  • I was given creative freedom to experiment and create what I would like to see using DaVinci Resolve (Video Editing Software), After Effects (Video Editing Software), and Envato (Media Library)

  • Assets were delivered as a 3840x2160 (4K UHD) video in H.265 MP4 Codec with a multi-channel audio output for the Instrumental Left Channel, Instrumental Right Channel, and cue/metronome.

Process

  • Speedom: was created from scratch, synchronizing color to change on the background and the “T9” text; along with synced flashes over hand-selected footage

  • Blackboy: This song was the first of the “Dark Medley” which I used Kansas City skyline footage with a custom processing chain to create a glowing black and white effect, cutting between different footage

  • K.O.D.: I cut together a stylized look featuring a dark ominous forest which I turned black and white, then colored the whole image red to give the footage a black and red look. I synchronized cuts to the beat and animated “K.O.D.” on screen to look like it’s alive and floating on screen. I also added synchronized flashes to the beat to emphasize certain hits.

  • Demons: I used the same glowing red processing chain to keep in theme with the dark medley. I took footage of an infinite chain loop, a glowing vortex, and synchronized flashes.

  • In The Trunk: Being part of the dark medley, I used the same custom processing chain over footage of long-exposure video of cars driving, which makes the footage glowing red and black with long streaks of light. I then hand-selected blocky text featuring lyrics of the song to come on screen synchronized with the music.

  • MMM (Michael Myers Mask): Still part of the dark medley, I kept the same custom processing chain of glowing black and red over footage of a crime scene where a Michael Myers character is burying his victim.

  • Alucard: The second to last song of the dark medley, I used the same custom processing chain over footage of a church and a church organ to help visualize the environment of the instruments in the song.

  • Paint A Dark Picture: Last of the Dark Medley, I used the same custom processing chain over footage of hands reaching out, grasping for stability, then cutting to an infinite loop of a dark infinite stone hallway.

  • Let’s Get F***ed (Crunked) Up: Being an older song of Tech N9ne, I featured a film effect giving a vintage and classic feel over footage of a club environment (Record players, dance clubs, and disco balls). I then layered synchronized lyrics with a “difference” blend mode on the text, which inverts the color of the footage, making the words pop on screen while seeing the original video.

  • Mitchell Bade: For this quick song, I used custom color processing on light bars with synchronized flashes for impact.

  • Questions: This being another older track of Tech N9ne, I wanted to feature cassette tapes. The hook features a call and response of chopping and a slow “why”. For the slow part, I featured a single shot of a cassette rolling its tape, and for the fast chopping, I featured quick cuts to emphasize the quickness of his rapping.

  • Tell Everyone: For this song, I layered synchronized “Tell Everyone” text over rotating skulls on top of a background textured with fast frames of crumpled paper. I also cut to a variety of skulls to keep things interesting and exciting.

  • It’s Alive: This track is from the newly remastered album Anghellic. This song felt electric so I created these visuals from scratch in After Effects and used the red glowing effect on top of it to keep in theme with the performance.

Results & Impact

  • Performed to a crowd with a max capacity of 25,000 people; one of Tech N9ne’s largest audiences to date with his first family friendly no cursing set.

Reflection

This was a different project with me with a tight deadline. Cutting together synchronized visuals in 4 days was a task, and next time around I would like to create more elements from scratch to make it more unique. I would also like to have more communication with other editors so that there aren’t export glitches with flashes like there was in this live show. Overall, I am very happy with my work and how it all came together. I just I wish I could have seen it in person.
